Renowned R&B and neo-soul singer Angie Stone has passed away at the age of 63 following a tragic car accident in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 1, 2025. The Grammy-nominated artist, known for her rich, soulful voice and influential contributions to music, was traveling with her band when their vehicle overturned and was struck by a big rig. While her bandmates sustained injuries, Stone was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Trailblazing Career Born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone's career in music began in the late 1970s as a member of The Sequence, one of the first all-female hip-hop groups. The group made history with their hit "Funk You Up," which became a pioneering track in the hip-hop genre.
Stone later became a part of the R&B trio Vertical Hold before embarking on a successful solo career in 1999. Her debut album, Black Diamond, featured the standout single "No More Rain (In This Cloud)," establishing her as a key voice in the neo-soul movement. In 2001, she released Mahogany Soul, which included the iconic track "Wish I Didn’t Miss You." Over the years, she collaborated with notable artists such as D’Angelo, Alicia Keys, and Snoop Dogg.
Her ten studio albums, three Grammy nominations, and countless accolades cemented her as one of the most beloved voices in contemporary R&B and soul music. Beyond music, Stone explored acting, making appearances in films, television series, and Broadway productions.
